Is it Adapter or Adaptor?
I googled and asked at a few different bike shops. No concensus,
yet.
Just want to thank my friend Michael, for the new photos of
valves and tires on the site.
Thanks!
1) Buy a Presta Valve Adapter. This will let you use a regular bicycle pump with your presta valve tire.
2) Drill out the hole in your rim, so it will fit a schrader valve tube. Drilling a hole is not recommended because the hole is the weakest point in the rim -- so making it bigger makes the entire rim weaker. It is also probably easier and quicker to buy an adapter and use the regular tube.
3) Buy a Presta
Valve pump online or at your local
store.
Presta valves use a smaller diameter hole in the rim, which
makes the rim much stronger -- the hole is the weakest point in the
rim. A presta valve is important for narrow rims, mountain bike
wheels, and higher pressure tires -- anywhere where strength and
endurance are important.
The last thing you want to do is taco your rim, because you
weakened it by drilling a hole for a schrader valve. Instead buy a
presta valve
adapter.
A presta valve is a valve with a very narrow stem that is found
on some mountain bikes and high performance bicycle tires.
The advantage of the presta valve is that it has a smaller diameter
than the standard Schrader valve, which means you have smaller
whole drilled through your rim. The hole in the rim is the weakest
point in the wheel, so it a smaller hole means a stronger
wheel.
Unfortunately, most common bicycle pumps use the larger Schrader
valve, because that valve is also used on car tires. So, to use a
regular bicycle pump, you must buy a Presta Valve
adapter.
There are also Presta valve pumps available for
purchase.
